The ability to identify the individual words in a compound word is a sub-skill of syllable segmentation. It supports and assists with the acquisition of phoneme segmentation, a necessary skill and critical in the learning-to-read process. The cards are formatted with two pictures representing two words that, when combined, form a compound word. The format also allows for a deletion task and is self-checking. This activity is aligned to the Reading Foundational Skill: Phonological Awareness and the Language Standard: Vocabulary. The cards may be used with partners or as a teacher-led activity with a group of students.
