One of the tasks teachers face is helping students with vowel team spellings. For example, “mail” and “play” have the same vowel sound but different spellings. This deck of cards contains a set of words with the long -a sound, spelled -ai and -ay. The various tasks using these cards are intended to familiarize students with the correct vowel spellings and extend their knowledge of homophones. This activity is aligned to the Reading Foundational Skill: Phonics and Word Recognition and the Language Standard: Conventions. The cards may be used with partners or as a teacher-led activity with a group of students.
